What is an Ecosystem Pond?
An ecosystem pond is a self-sustaining, low-maintenance "living" water feature that mimics how nature cleans itself. Instead of using harsh chemicals to keep the water clear, it relies on a specific balance of biological components. Think of it as a closed-loop system where every element has a job to do. Using the Aquascape model, here are the five essential "ingredients" that make it work:
Mechanical and Biological Filtration
-
The Skimmer (Mechanical): This acts like a pool skimmer, pre-filtering the water by pulling debris (like leaves and twigs) off the surface before they can sink and decay.
-
The BioFalls® (Biological): This is where the "good" bacteria live. As water passes through filter mats and specialized media, these bacteria break down excess nutrients that would otherwise cause algae.
Rocks and Gravel
-
Far from being just for looks, rocks and gravel provide a massive amount of surface area for beneficial microbes to grow. They also protect the pond liner from UV rays and provide a natural habitat for bottom-dwelling organisms.
Recirculation System
-
This is the "heart" of the pond. A pump (housed safely in the skimmer) moves the water through the filtration system. Constant movement keeps the water oxygenated and prevents it from becoming stagnant.
Fish
-
Fish, such as Koi or Goldfish, are more than just pets. They play a vital role by eating algae and insects. In return, their waste provides essential nutrients for the pond plants.
Aquatic Plants
-
Plants are the "lungs" of the pond. They thrive by absorbing the nitrogen and nutrients produced by the fish waste and decaying organic matter. By "starving" the algae of its food source, plants keep the water crystal clear naturally.
